Canton is a Charter Township government in which the legislative body is the Board of Trustees. The Board includes the three full-time elected administrators Supervisor, Clerk, and Treasurer, and four part-time elected Trustees.

Canton is served by the 35th District Court, which handles civil infractions, misdemeanors, small claims, landlord matters, and general civil matters.

Most of Canton is covered by the 21st state congressional district and is currently represented by Dian Slavens (D). A small part of Canton east of Haggerty Rd is in the 20th district and is represented by Marc Corriveau (D).

Canton is in the 7th state senate district and is currently represented by Bruce Patterson (R).

Canton is in the 11th Michigan congressional district and is currently represented by Thaddeus McCotter (R).

Michigan's current federal senators are Carl Levin (D) and Debbie Stabenow (D).
